Not sure if I have talked about why I choose cassette as the medium of the album.

It is similar to how my brain works.
Its unstable, messy, chaotic..? And for cassette, we simply cannot choose the tracks, like on Macbook, Spotify or a CD. If you wanna go to track 1, track 7 or back to track 2, you will have to turn to either side A or B, or you will have to fast forward or rewind. Well surely you will have to try a few times before getting where you want to be. It’s like memories.

Recording it through Tascam, was an experiment and also what an experience! Its super inconsistent. Omg let me tell you… sometimes the rollers will stop working, sometimes the tape will get torn, sometimes the Tascam spinner wouldn’t turn with the cassette roller and sometimes the tape will have this super annoying sneaky noise.
    Got through it
and we now have limited 80 pretty little personal cassettes.

Each cassette tape, is real time recorded.
Every LMTYS cassette has 67 mins of my life in them.

about

Let Me Tell You Something is Angela Wai Nok Hui’s debut album.

Since 2019, life has changed for the people of Hong Kong, both at home and around the world.

**

I viewed the events unfolded from the outside, in the UK

There was nothing I could do in the first few months (and even now)

When I finally went back

Being on the street

Being in the crowd

Being with friends, families

and strangers

With the same intention

Good intentions

**

The album is a musical journal, documenting Hui’s feelings and thoughts on identity, resistance and memory; of growing up in Hong Kong, before moving to the UK as a teenager.

An intimate project, a whisper in listeners’ ears and an invitation into a strange yet beautiful world.

**

2020, New Year’s Day

I ran.

People were just having fun and chanting slogans

This ongoing event made me realise that

No matter where I am

No matter where Hong Kongers are in the world

We are always one.

**

As close friends and collaborators joined Angela on her journey - drinking, laughing and listening together - Let Me Tell You Something was born, an album of connection, belonging and discovery.

about

angela wai nok hui London, UK

Percussionist, multidisciplinary artist. Fav is sound thou. I have fascinations with sounds that are – not meant to be.  Glitches, feedbacks, peaking drones, the distortion from a phone recording, the lofi quality of a cassette tape…For me I often use chaos to tell a story, I quite like to manipulate shit sounds and I’ve fallen in love with imperfections because its just the most beautiful thing. ... more
